Chartres
Chartres, a city steeped in history, has its roots deeply embedded in the past. Occupied since prehistoric times, it experienced its heyday during the Roman Antiquity under the name of Autricum.
During the Carolingian Renaissance, Chartres experienced strong expansion, notably through the donation of the Virgin's veil by Charles II the Bald in 876, becoming the most populous city in Neustria, and shining through the height of its walls, the beauty of its buildings, and the culture of Fine Arts.
But it was during the Middle Ages that Chartres truly flourished, becoming an important pilgrimage center thanks to its famous cathedral, built between the 11th and 13th centuries and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A founding masterpiece of Gothic architecture and stained glass art.
The city has also been the scene of key moments in French history, such as during the Hundred Years' War and the siege of Chartres. Today, its rich heritage and medieval atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for history and culture enthusiasts.
Chartres not only relies on being a city steeped in its glorious past; it is also resolutely focused on the future economically. Nowadays, the city plays a major role in the regional economy, notably due to its strategic position between Paris and the provinces.
Chartres is also known for hosting the Cosmetic Valley, a competitiveness cluster dedicated to the cosmetic industry. This cluster brings together world-renowned companies as well as innovative startups, making Chartres a major hub in the beauty and cosmetics sector.
This concentration of expertise and innovation not only contributes to boosting the local economy but also strengthens the city's reputation on a national and international scale.
Thus, Chartres successfully combines its prestigious past with an economically dynamic future outlook.
